Performance Readings:
June 22, 2019: Palms-Rancho Park Branch Library. To celebrate Bloomsday, Joe read selections from two episodes of James Joyce's Ulysses: Episode 9, Scylla and Charybdis, and Episode 12, Cyclops. Stephen Dedalus and Leopold Bloom are outsiders, fighting for their honor and dignity. patch.com/california/centurycity/calendar/event/20190622/577068/celebrate-bloomsday-joe-praml-reads-from-james-joyces-ulysses
In Scylla and Charybdis, Stephen Dedalus with some of Dublin’s literati at National Library, is insulted and hurt he was not invited to a literary gathering. He responds with an unusual take on Hamlet and Shakespeare which fascinates them and keeps them at the Library until he is finished.
In Cyclops, Leopold Bloom goes to Barney Kiernan’s pub, a place he otherwise never habituates, on a mission of goodwill for one of the pub regulars. During a verbal free-for-all, Bloom sets off the bigoted bully Citizen. Bloom flees for his life from the Citizen’s wrath in Elijah’s chariot.
Ulysses is one of the great novels of the 20th century, banned in the UK and the US until the 1930s. The novel takes place on one day, June 16, 1904. The day is celebrated as Bloomsday. Every year people gather in pubs, theatres and libraries to hear Bloomsday readings of Ulysses.
Joe Praml, former London-based stage actor, member of the International James Joyce Foundation and a Joyce scholar, gives annual Bloomsday readings at Los Angeles venues. Joe’s love and enthusiasm about the novel, its characters, and Dublin, bring out the ribald comedy of the novel.
April 6, 2019: Westwood Library presented Joe Praml's reading of the poems of Robert Burns, including his narrative masterpiece “Tam o’Shanter” based on an old Scots legend. This is part of the worldwide celebration of Burns' birthday.
Joe describes “Tam o’Shanter” as “a rollicking, funny poem about Tam, a farmer who often gets drunk with his friends in a pub in Ayr, Scotland. One night, anxious to get home as a storm of driving rain and lightning is brewing, and riding his faithful horse Maggie, he takes a short cut through the dark woods. Along the way, he comes across an old haunted church, lit up with fire in the dark night. In and about the church a feral bacchanal is in wild progress, with witches and warlocks wildly dancing, and the devil himself playing the pipes. Tam is spellbound. He spies one witch in particular, a lovely young creature who is barely clad in an extremely short cutty sark or skirt, outdoing everyone with her own exuberant dancing. Tam, transfixed, without thinking, yells out “Weel done, Cutty-sark!” giving himself away. The mob of witches and warlocks, led by the lovely young witch, Nannie Dee, chases Tam and Maggie. They barely escape, but sadly they leave behind Maggie’s lovely cherished tail.”
