Joe Praml’s Jason is an intelligent and ambitious play, with a distinct theatrical vision. In Jason, the argument that mindless, faceless corporate machines are dominating the instincts and loyalties of the individual feels very contemporary. A great strength of this play is the magic realism element. The juxtaposition of the mundane with the extraordinary creates unsettling, disturbing dramatic landscapes, in which the petty shallowness of a modern world is exposed in action that consistently disturbs rather than dictates. David Myles’ direction heightens the dark humour of the piece and his casting of Ian Bamforth as Jason, Brendan Donneson as Finnegan and Sid Huggett as The Old Man is brilliant. Sid Huggett as The Old Man is powerful, Ian Bamforth as Jason chilling.
